You either stand up against this now, or this can and will start happening to you. This isn't about race, or religion, or making people safe, it's about authoritarian power.
This is the dictator's playbook:
You ride the back of a populist movement. You stir up fear. You delegitimize the press. You slowly chip away at legislative and judicial authority. This is happening in our country right now.
I know it's not fun being told you're wrong, but this isn't about who you voted for or what party you have loyalty too. This is about the future of Democracy in Western Civilization. These fights never seem as big as they are in the moment, but they are.
So what you can you do?
Well first thinks first, and I think Kurt Vonnegut said it best:
"God damn it, you've got to be kind."
You also stand up for people. If you see someone getting bullied on the street, or at your job, or your school, for you stand up for them. You tell your children to do the same. So much of the power of an authoritarian is based in stirring up fear in the people due to ideological differences.
Call your local representatives, or if you live within walking distance, go to their offices. You'll find that nothing puts the fear of God into a member of Congress than a flood of angry constituents. Congress can still draft bills to counteract Trump's authoritarian measures, they can block his appointees, but they are only going to do so if they feel pressure from their voting base.
I see people mocking the protests that happened over the last weekend, saying how useless they are. Nothing could be further from the truth, those protest got the attention of lawyers who worked long hours to make sure that American Citizens who were being detained illegally got to re-enter their own country. Protest draw attention, and in this day and age attention is a precious resource. The ACLU raised $20 million in a weekend because people were paying attention.
I'm not saying this as a Democrat who is mad that Trump won. Go ask your history teacher, go ask people live under the rule of a authoritarian figure. Ask them what the first months of decline looked like.
We may not agree about things like a flat tax, or universal healthcare, but these are arguments for another time. This is our country's future at stake. All of the things we love about America, the right to vote, the right to say what we want and believe in what we want to believe in can all be taken away in the blink of an eye.
If you are content standing on the sidelines, or are simply are too stubborn to go against your party, just know that you are going to be held accountable.
So absolutely get out there and do your job, take care of your family, strive for a better life for you and your loved ones. These are the core liberties afforded to you by our amazing country. The are liberties worth fighting for. I'm telling you now is the to fight back - using all of the peaceful yet incredibly powerful tools afforded to us by the soldiers, intellectuals, protesters, workers, women and men of all creeds and color who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.
We are all accountable.
