Today Rockstar Games announced that they are delaying the release of their upcoming game, Red Dead Redemption 2, until spring of next year:
Red Dead Redemption 2 is now set to launch Spring 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans.
We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready. We are really excited to bring you more details about the game this summer. In the meantime, please enjoy this selection of new screenshots from the world of Red Dead Redemption 2.
If there was ever a studio with the financial and critical clout to delay a blockbuster game, it would be Rockstar. When 2k, Rockstar's publisher, had their last quarterly earnings call, they reported that GTA 5 had crossed the 75 million sold threshold. At this point Rockstar could spend a decade making the worst video game ever made, and still be in the good graces of their publisher.
There's very little chance Red Dead Redemption 2 will be a bad game. It's predecessor was one of my favorite games ever made, incorporating great storytelling with the open world structure the studio has made famous with the GTA series. The first Red Dead Redemption had an extensive online mode that in a lot of ways influenced the wild success the studio has had with GTA: Online. Hopefully the team will take all the time they need in creating a sequel to a gaming masterpiece.
